Forming the Fleet

"Life in a Wormhole" is a collection of blog posts documenting my adventures in EVE Online. Together with a small group of real life friends we will attempt to survive in the harshest of space EVE has to offer.

"Plus One, Tackle."

As was part of the plan, my friend Dietrich who's new to EVE joined us in 0.0 for the first time last night. The entrance system is always ridiculously busy, so we slipped him in during the early hours when few were about, ready and waiting for a bit of Friday night prime time killing.

I've read a few different opinions on how beginners should start their PvP careers. Seems like the only two sane choices for a low SP pilot are:

  1. Start in a frigate as cheap & disposable tackle, expect losses, re-ship often.
  2. Start in a cruiser with a reasonably high buffer tank, more forgiving, mistakes don't matter.

Now I'm not saying it's wrong to start someone off in a cruiser. I see the merits, particularly if you're in the middle of 0.0 where sometimes a ship loss can mean the end of your evening.


I was brought up in EVE with the belief that a pilot can be useful after 1 day of skill training. You give a pilot a scram & web and he can be the central pillar of your operation. For me, to put someone brand new to PvP into a buffer cruiser is like condemning them to be useless for the first few months.

"Sit in here so you can't do any harm. Once I know you aren't an idiot we'll look at giving you a more useful role."

That's not how I play. This is the first time I get to help forge my own fleet from scratch and I'll be damned sure that all my members will both have fun (else what's the point) but be useful, too.

... and so, Friday night comes. We're a two-man fleet sat at our bubble, I've gone through the basic, basic survival stuff & I'm fairly sure he's forgotten most of it already. We're just chatting on comms, having a bit of banter with the guys in local.

Honestly, I'm trying to keep it interesting for him. Bubble camping is like fishing - part of the enjoyment is the wait. You wait, you wait, you wait... I enjoy it; and I know that most of the time the wait is worth it - but this is his first trip out and so far it's been an hour of making bookmarks & not much else.

I let him tackle & web me, shoot me a bit... waiting, waiting, waiting... until  (very kindly) an Anathema drops into our bubble. I'm quick to scram & web, hugging the them tight - he's not going anywhere. Time to teach.

"Scram him, stop him getting away."
- Already have. And webbed.
"Good. Well then it's time to put him out of his misery."
- Shit, it turned off. Oh - do I need stay close to him?
"Check the max range of your stuff here & here. Keep within that range."
- Got him again!

As first kills go. A Covert Ops kill is a pretty decent one. 71 million ISK is a nice amount of damage and the 11 million in loot could replace Dietrich's ship 10 times over. Plus, we got his pod! Apparently costing him a further 21 million in implants. Always a pleasure.

As the evening was coming to a close, we made temporary friends with a Navy Slicer. It was a sort of agreement based on inability take each other out. I knew we didn't stand a chance in a fight & he knew there was no chance of catching us unaware - we were flying smart.

We didn't fleet up, that's how you get blown to pieces - but we did make a new chat channel & agree to leave each other alone. Turns out this guy's kindness at fleeting up paid off; as did our decision to take a small leap of faith & trust the guy. A Badger, with the ship name "Derp Machine" (heh) was attempting to haul some stuff through our system. To his credit, he didn't land in any of our bubbles, but his align time and warp speed was totally out matched and he soon paid the price of trespassing - dropping almost 100 million isk of loot!

So, Fleet Day 1? Two kills, around 110 million ISK in loot, zero losses.

So far so good! o/
